don’t Think Too Hard, Just Grab the Camera!

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Funny things happen around our house. Often. So I have to be armed and ready with my camera and there are times when I don’t have time to think too hard about the settings and composition! This was one of those times. Don’t ask me why Evan is so obsessed with the Dwight bobble head (for all of you Office TV shows fans) that belongs to my oldest son….but he is. Do you have a child that has strange obsessions? Evan is always getting ‘in character’ and we really never know what it will be for the day.  Don’t think too hard about setting up the shot, if you do, you might just miss it. Just get the shot and capture the moment, one day your memory will fade and you will be so glad to have the photo!  (He went in the bathroom and ‘fixed’ his hair! Oh My!)

Hey Howdy Hey … My Name is Woody!

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

This reminded me of the difference between the Storytelling shot and the mug shot so I though I would put it up as a good example.

If you have been reading my blog you will know by now that Woody is a very special toy at our house…Evan’s best friend (other than his brothers and sister of course!) He got these great JPs from his Aunt Donna for Christmas so I had to get a shot. The first shot is great and I like the way it came out, the window light is on his face and the colors pop:

But this shot below tells the real story. He is showing me that his shirt is just like Woody’s. It has more emotion; it makes me remember a feeling just from looking at the photo. That is what I think photography is all about…especially family photography.  I love shots that ‘jump start’ the story that I am after with my camera.  Keep your eyes open for these shots and start using your camera to tell your fun stories of your family memories!

It is Not Too Late To Get a Christmas Card Out!

Monday, December 20th, 2010

After going through all the choices, it was hard to decide but this was the final pick for the card this year:

img_0307 card

It is hard to pick one that everyone seems to be looking and not running away from the camera but it is always worth the effort! Even though I am a big fan of the more candid shots, it is good to have some of these family shots for your album or desk at work every now and then…or at least once a year! When was the last time you got a nice shot of your whole family?

Have you gotten a card out yet? It is not too late to take a picture today and get it printed at a one hour place or just email them out! Be sure to get some great storytelling shots this week as the company and family starts to come into town. Remember, the unplanned moments are the best!

Is your camera ready?!

Meet My Photo Friend Nick Kelsh!

Nick thinks M is nuts! img

Here is my photo friend Nick Kelsh… I know…I know he looks like I am driving him crazy! He tends to have that look on his face a lot when we get together….but he is usually very patient with me!  I just have to take what the man says and convert it to my ‘mom logic language’ and I am good to go!  I know I told you to get a girlfriend to be your photo friend … but, Nick is great for the advanced questions!

Nick has this amazing FB page that has grown as big as his heart. He is the only pro I know that truly cares about us Camera Moms to the point where he is willing to review our photos on his site and offer tons of help! No one else does that!!

http://www.facebook.com/how.to.photograph.your.baby

Three times a week he does a ‘teaching’ video of the photos posted on his FB site. It is full of tips and treasures to make you think about what you are doing with your camera and ultimately take better pictures! Make a point to watch these and you will learn so much. I will address some of the tips over here to help you work out the details then you can post your best pictures over to Nick for his review.  If there is something we can’t figure out together then we will just ask Nick!

Here he is with my photo friend Anne Lineberger, look at this caring man! And a few other shots of recent Nick sightings…he is on a mission to make us all better photographers!

One of the best things about Nick is that he REALLY loves all the photos you post on his page. Like I said, he is the only pro I know that understands a mom’s passion to get good quality photos of her kids herself. He truly wants to teach us non-pro camera moms (and dads) how to be better photographers and capture our family memories. WOW! Are we blessed to have him around or what!

Thanks Nick for all you do we REALLY REALLY appreciate you!

Melanie….. for all the soon to be Confident Camera Moms out there!

This is my five year old son Evan. Lately I have been getting out of the ‘green box’ and going after the ‘non cheesy’ look. I was taking a lot of him looking at the camera, but when he puckered up, I knew I had to get it! Now it is one of my all time favorite shots of Evan, fitting his loving, carefree personality perfectly! If I had waited for him to open his eyes and look at me again I would have missed this great shot! So, one tip here is to keep your mind (and eyes) open to shoot something you normally wouldn’t and see how you like it.
